Need help making the case? There’s no shortage of data demonstrating the importance of healthy eating at the office. Some reports focus on decreased absenteeism (21% less sick days); others focus on increased presentee-ism (11% increased productivity). Whichever way you dice it, it’s clear that workplace wellness is a worthwhile investment. Joy Gendusa nails it on the head, in YFS Magazine, when she divides the benefits into 5 broad categories: more energy, less sick days, more motivation, better concentration, and improved morale.

How about a little more help? As many of you know, our foundational purpose is to ensure that well-balanced nutritious meals are affordable and conveniently available for ALL Detroiters. We acknowledge the important role physical proximity plays in a sprawling city with poor public transportation, so we target neighborhood corner stores and gas stations as our primary vehicle to increase access to fresh and healthy foods–particularly in lower-income neighborhoods. Every workplace we service builds our capacity to service a corollary corner store. So when you make the tasty choice of bringing Fresh Corner to your workplace, you’re not just making your workplace a brighter, healthier, more productive environment, you’re doing so for all of Detroit!

Need one last nudge? How about some hard numbers from the experts:

William C Weldon, Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, in Jan-Feb 2011 Harvard Business Review: “For every dollar we invest in our workers’ health, we see a return of more than $4 in reduced health care costs, lower absenteeism, and improved productivity. Our health care spending averages 4% below benchmarks for our industry. From 2001 through 2009, we avoided more than $21 million in health care expenditures.”

From the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2010: “A 1% reduction in health risks such as weight, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol risk factors would save $83 to $103 annually in medical costs per person, much of which could accrue to employers in reduced premiums.”

From the Journal of Health Affairs in 2010: “Medical costs are reduced by approximately $3.27 for every dollar spent on workplace wellness programs.”

From a 2007 report commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce: “Indirect costs to employers of employee poor health—lower productivity, higher rates of disability, higher rates of injury, and more workers’ compensation claims—can be two–three times the costs of direct medical expenses.”

From the Journal of Population Health Management in 2010: “Preventing disease increases productivity—asthma, high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity each reduce annual productivity by between $200 and $440 per person.”

From the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2006: “Absenteeism costs are reduced by approximately $2.73 for every dollar spent on workplace wellness programs.”
